Ward won through four matches at The Crucible Club in Reading to earn the last spot in the 24-player line-up at snooker’s most iconic venue.

Sixteen hopefuls, who qualified via the two-year official and one-year ‘Race to the Crucible’ ranking lists, competed across two days for the opportunity to take on four-time World Seniors Snooker champion White.

The 44-year-old made a strong start to the weekend by whitewashing Matthew Day in the opening round before downing former English Amateur champion Jamie Curtis-Barrett 4-1 to reach the final day.

The weekend’s highest break of 106 helped Ward to a further 4-0 success in the semi-finals as he set up a final round meeting with Andrew Norman.

Former professional Norman was aiming to reach the final stages of the World Seniors Snooker Championship for a third successive year and had beaten Billy Ginn (4-2), Stephen Groves (4-0) and Mark Love (4-1) en route to the final.

Ward, who previously lifted the title in event five of the World Seniors Tour, took a tight opening frame on the black and never looked back – wrapping up the victory with a break of 59 in the fourth.

He will face White during the 12:00 session of Thursday 7 May with the winner set to take on Robert Milkins in the second round.

By reaching the title match, both players secured their places at the Crucible Theatre for the 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship via the ranking lists. For Jones, it will be a debut appearance at the sport’s most famous venue, while Townsend will return for a second successive year.

Townsend made a strong start to the weekend by overcoming Karl Ashmore and Tam Mustafa with the loss of just a single frame to reach the final day.

Consecutive deciding frame successes against Steve Crowley and event five winner Daniel Ward then saw Townsend into a final against Jones.

Jones had battled through a final frame against former World Seniors Snooker champion Aaron Canavan to reach the title match. He proved to be no match for Townsend on this occasion as the 46-year-old ran out a 4-0 victor, with both players having done enough to qualify for the Crucible.

Super Seniors Hat-Trick for Hunter

John Hunter won his third consecutive Super Seniors title at The Crucible Club in Reading by defeating Kevin Willsher 2-0.

The Super Seniors number one came through a field of 15 players in the one-day event to round off the season in style.

Victories over John Rees (2-0) and Ashley Beal (2-1) saw Hunter reach the title match where he faced Willsher, who had defeated Mark Evans 2-1 in the semi-finals.

A dominant final display from Hunter saw him compile breaks of 54 and 56 en route to securing a 2-0 victory.

Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre will host the biggest ever edition of the flagship event for World Seniors Snooker (WSS) on May 6-10 with 24 players set to compete.

The top eight seeds will advance directly into the last 16, where they will be joined by the eight winners of the first round matches.

THE TOP EIGHT

Defending champion Alfie Burden will arrive as the top seed, while reigning British Seniors Open winner Joe Perry is in the opposite side of the draw as the second seed. The rest are ordered by the official World Snooker Tour (WST) ranking list, meaning Mark Williams and Ronnie O’Sullivan take third and fourth positions respectively.

The remainder of the top eight is made up of Stuart Bingham, Ali Carter, Matthew Stevens and Robert Milkins – while Jimmy White, Ken Doherty and Reanne Evans are among the seeded players for the opening round draw.

• Up to and including the quarter-finals: Best-of-7 Frames
• Semi-Finals: Best-of-13 Frames
• Final: Best-of-19 Frames

In an exciting twist, a black ball shoot out will replace any deciding frames should the scoreline reach 3-3/6-6/9-9.

Channel 5 will cover every ball of the event which this year will increase to 24 players and begin with a two-table set up, allowing more players to experience the thrill of playing at the home of snooker.

Making their World Seniors Snooker Championship debut will be seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, three-time world champion Mark Williams, 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham and 12-time World Women’s Snooker champion Reanne Evans. Former Masters and UK Champion Matthew Stevens, two time finalist Ali Carter, and former World Semi Finalist Anthony Hamilton also feature in the line-up.

Four-time World Seniors Snooker champion Jimmy White returns, as does 1997 world champion Ken Doherty and Malta’s Tony Drago. The defending champion is Alfie Burden, while also returning are former ranking event winners Joe Perry, Robert Milkins and Dominic Dale.

Working with global federations means also making their return will be 2024 World Seniors Snooker champion Igor Figueiredo, the current Pan-American Seniors Champion, as well as Craig Steadman who retained the European Seniors Championship title in 2025. Mohamed Samy Elkhayat, from Egypt, receives a place in the event thanks to securing the African Seniors Championship title in Morocco while Asia-Pacific Seniors champion Roger Farebrother also receives an invitation.

The day will see WSS once again partnering with Age UK Sheffield to bring 500 local residents from the aging population in the city to the iconic Crucible Theatre to watch the action live, meet legends of the sport and socialise with each other.

The number of over 50’s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/26. This compares to around 1.4 million in 2016/17 – a 49% increase in ten years, and Age UK reported in 2016 that there are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK.

Jason Francis, Chairman of WSS and creator of the initiative, said: “According to our partners Age UK, half-a-million older people go at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Loneliness, living alone and poor social connections is hugely detrimental to people’s health and this will be our fourth year of holding this heart-warming event for the people of Sheffield.”

By lifting the title, the 2018 World Seniors Snooker (WSS) champion has guaranteed that he will finish first on the official two-year ranking list at the end of the campaign and has therefore qualified for the 2026 edition of the flagship event at the Crucible Theatre in May.

Canavan, from Jersey, denied Greene a fifth title of the series but the former professional from Northern Ireland still looks likely to join him in qualifying for the sport’s most iconic venue.

Forty-two players contested the two-day event and Canavan reached the concluding day of action by defeating Stephen Groves (4-2) and Ian Rose (4-0).

He began the Sunday by overcoming Dean Galbally 4-1 before a top break of 100 saw Canavan beat Steve Crowley 4-2 to set up a title match meeting with Greene.

Greene had made it to a sixth successive World Seniors Tour event final by last downing Matthew Ford 4-1 and only losing a single frame en route.

Canavan was competing in his second final of the season, having made it to at least the quarter-finals of all but one of the previous seven events, and his consistency was finally rewarded as contributions of 61 and 76 saw him get over the line and secure the title.

Hunter Goes Back-To-Back

John Hunter beat David Brock 2-0 to win a second consecutive Super Seniors title at The Crucible Club in Reading.

It marked a third title of the season for Hunter, who is ranked first in the Super Seniors ranking list, as he came through a field of 23 players aged 55 and over on Sunday.

He dropped just a single frame en route to the final as he defeated Paul Smith (2-0), Wayne Martin (2-1) and Mark Evans (2-0).

There he faced Brock, who had won through consecutive deciders against Mark Thomas, Brian Sharpe and Andrew Barrett to reach the title match.

Hunter once again proved too strong, however, and a top break of 36 helped him to secure the crown.

Milkins, known as ‘The Milkman’, is celebrating his 30th year as a World Snooker Tour (WST) professional and won his maiden ranking event title at the 2023 Welsh Open. He has a career-high ranking of 12th and made a maximum break in the qualifying rounds of the 2006 World Championship.

Former World Seniors champion Lines will head the Crucible Theatre in excellent form having topped the EPSB English Seniors Tour and currently sitting in second on the Q Tour Europe ranking list.
