World Seniors Snooker (WSS) is delighted to announce that ‘Seniors of Derby Day’ will be staged on Saturday 27 December during the British Seniors Snooker Open at Vaillant Live in Derby.

The day will see hundreds of the cities aging population, who are often vulnerable and alone over Christmas, invited to enjoy a day out at the British Seniors Snooker Open.

Working alongside Age UK and a number of other local charities, attendees will be invited to enjoy some top class snooker and socialise while finding out what support the city can offer them.

Jason Francis, Chairman of WSS, said: “We know from our work in Sheffield, during the World Seniors Snooker Championship, what a great initiative this is and Derby City Council has fully embraced using the return of snooker to the city to help with highlighting this national issue. The research we have is almost ten years old, but even then we know over a half a million people could go five or six days a week without seeing another person. As a result of the recent pandemic, we know these numbers are much higher.

Baggy Shanker, MP for Derby South, said: “Snooker’s return to Derby is great news for our city. I’m especially pleased to see local businesses coming together through the 50 for FIFTY initiative to make sure senior members of our community can be part of the occasion. This initiative isn’t just about enjoying a great day out, it’s also an opportunity for participants to learn more about the local support available to them. My thanks go to everyone involved in making it happen.”

Katy Pugh, CEO for Age UK Derby and Derbyshire, said: “We are so pleased to be able to support this initiative to help older people enjoy a social event this Christmas and hopefully link them up with activities to help make 2026 less lonely and more fun.”

The British Seniors Snooker Open takes place at Vaillant Live in Derby on 26-28 December and features a star-studded line-up featuring Jimmy White, Ken Doherty, Stuart Bingham and more. The event will be shown live on Channel 5 and tickets are still available here.

The Seniors of Derby Day is part of the 50 for FIFTY Scheme where local businesses sponsor 50 tickets for the cities vulnerable as part of our Event Angels Scheme. Early adopters include Chads Cars, Vaillant Boilers, Toyota UK, Karam Properties and the University of Derby. Any local business or benefactor should contact jason@jfsport.co.uk if they wish to help further support.
